I was recently introduced to Carly Dow's music through a buddy out near Nelson. Well, I guess I was recently introduced to Carly Dow through a buddy out near Nelson, then I proceeded to check out her music because, well, that should be pretty evident if you've read this blog before, if not..I like chips and music. Buddy was nice enough to flow me his copies of both of Carly's albums, which I threw on the most recent LP, Comet, pretty much as soon as I got back to my house (and was in the presence of a record player). I'm not gonna bury the lead, Comet is tight. It's somewhere between folk, country and bluegrass. Carly's voice reminds me a lot of Stevie Nicks (I've never actively listened to Fleetwood Mac or Nick's solo music...but there's just some things you know), suffice to say, Carly's voice beautifully conveys the emotion of her lyrics. Even without listening to the actual words you can feel the songs. Comet is a relatively mellow album that at times somehow sounds hard (like on Tiger's Eye). The sound is full and cinematic, like a nice slightly smoky whiskey. Oh, and Carly's banjo playing is tight, it's not off the rails stomping all over the room banjo, just nice propelling picking that provides a lot of character to the music.
As soon as I listened to Comet I knew it was going to end up on this here blog in relatively short time, so I went straight to trying to figure out what chips it'd pair with. This past week I found a bag of new chip flavours in the basement thanks to my (not) salty wife, in this bag was a bag of Lay's Flavours from China Cucumber flavoured potato chips. Leading up to tonight I was thinking, these'll probably be familiar yet new and refreshing....now were they? I dunno, sort of. They're Lay's chips which are found all over the world under various names, the crunch is there but relatively light. The flavour of these however is funky. As soon as they hit your mouth this super sugary sweetness kicks you right in the tastebuds, it's kind of weird an unexpected, it's then followed by a salty cucumber, then topped off with an almost minty aftertaste. The start of consumption almost tastes like a sugar cookie, with a brief cucumber flavour, followed by mint. What the what. I dunno about these chips, I don't think I could down a full bag, the sweetness mixed with mint aftertaste is just throwing me off. I was hoping that these'd be closer to dill pickle...but without the dill, just a nice smooth and refreshing chip. I guess the mint is sort of refreshing (though it doesn't show up in the ingredients list [kind of confusing]).
So yeah, Carly's music is tight AF, Cucmber chips aren't as refreshingly new yet familiar as I thought they'd be.
Stay hydrated,
Marc
p.s. Wow Cut & Run is a great song
