My kids getting slightly older means I can now bring them along on my adventures to shows in Winnipeg (at least when it's all ages and ties into a weekend..which is what happened just over a week ago). I was stoked with I saw Quit It! was making their way to/through Manitoba again and it was on a Friday. It was touch and go for a minute if I/we were going to make it but the hockey scheduling gods shone down on me/us and I was able to justify keeping the kids up late on a Friday night. First of all Domohaus is absolutely fantastic, Adrian and Hannah seem to have a scene (tapped into a scene), that's friendly (and more importantly kid friendly, at least IMO). At their 4th Annual Occasional Halloween House Party (with bands playing out of the garage due to mild spitting/rain) started off with Grotoko (full band style for the first time in a minute) killing it in their '66 Batman villain costumes. I love Blue's live stage presence, it fits perfectly with the confluence of dark meets light of their alt pop/rock/folk music. I enjoy the acoustic with kazoo of their usual show, however the full band fleshed it out for a fresh new live sound for me (I've only ever seen solo).
This is a "chip blog" right? Haha. A friend of mine was down in the states recently and she (being the thoughtful person that she always is [thanks Top]) brought me back a couple bags of 'merican Lay's to try out. So let's get to bag 1, Kettle Cooked Cheesy Buffalo Dip flavored (spelling flavoured without a u always bugs me). Good kettle cooked crunch (I can't remember the last time I had kettle cooked Lay's, it's been a minute), like a 5/10 for crunch..not super aggressive but just enough. The flavour is familiar (Lay's can't put out a billion flavours without treading some of the same water) but still it is a new flavour. I'd say these taste like their cheesy garlic bread with some generic Buffalo hot sauce dashed in. There's a nice kick. The heat is similar to the typical jalapeno heat typically found in chip seasonings, like a 2/5ish. There's some cheese notes, chicken is in the mix, buffalo hot sauce. These are good. The flavour name is accurate to taste and the flavour on kettle cooked is on point.
Next up was Solaire who seems to be a relatively new band. Female lead singer with a great voice. Live they came off to me as 2000s emo influenced mixed with late aughts pop punk and some shoe gazey elements. There were a lot of pedals on the floor between their guitar players. I felt their live sounds was a bit harder than what I've been able to find recorded on the internets. They also noted they were going to be playing a Paramore cover set in the next couple weeks (for a cited influence [I've never really listened to Paramore so I can't compare]). I found them quite enjoyable.
Bag 2, Lay's Hot Sauce (there's a bottle of Frank's RedHot Original on the bag [it's weird it wouldn't be Lay's Frank's RedHot Sauce {were they concerned people wouldn't be able to tell if they were Lay's or Frank's chips?}]). These are just standard chips, none of that fancy kettle cooking here. Honestly, not much of a Frank's-in-sense when I whiffed. The seasoning is almost chalky on the chips. Is this how crunchy Lay's usually are, these are kind of weak, go to mush relatively quickly. Good spice level, probably a 3/5, but these are the wrong base chips for the seasoning. I've switched to Louisiana from Frank's in recent years so I'm not going to be your go to guy to be like, "those definitely taste like Frank's" but they don't taste exactly like I remember Frank's being...but maybe it's due to the chalkyness of the seasoning and the wrong base chip (IMO). These aren't terrible, but if you have a choice between Lay's Hot Sauce and Lay's Kettle Cooked Cheesy Buffalo Dip, well, Dip then get outta there.
Next up was the reason I drove to Wpg for, Quit It!. If you search them on this here blog you'll be able to read my thoughts from a couple years ago, their debut album Spilling Out is one of the best albums of the past decade. Quit It! is a force to be reckoned with. For their set they blasted through the entirety of their new album, Through the Debris. The power emanating from them on stage is invigorating. Was I expecting all Debris and no Spilling Out? No. Was I surprised? No. Was I disappointed? That's a big negative. Quit It! speaks truth to power. The sonic progression from Spilling Out to Through the Debris resulted in the pop elements being toned down a bit while the hardcore and aggression was cranked up a couple of notches. Lyrically they're still very progressive and (for good reason) a little more pissed off than their previous outing. Quit It! are a call to action that should be heard. Oh, and any interaction I've had with them they've come across as really genuine and friendly people. Mikey Blotto is a gem.
Kids were beat after Quit It! so we missed, Screaming At Traffic.
Stay hydrated,
Marc
