Cutesy Monster Man / Skyline Drive / My Jacket

Apparently last week was my blog week..that came and went. Earlier today I was going through the notes on my phone and I noticed that there were quite a number of notes for chips that I had consumed but not blogged about yet..so today I'm catching up on a few past chip notes..

December 10, 2016...I consumed Covered Bridge Red & White Potato Chips with Sea Salt. I believe these were some sort of Canada Day related chip..but I'm not all that sure. They're a nice fully flavoured covered bridge chip with skins and deep browning on an adequate portion. Lightweight kettle cooked..a tad greasy but that comes with the kettle cooking and such. Being kettle cooked they hold up to dipping fairly well. It could be in my head but the red chips had a slightly more earthy flavour than the standard "white" potato chips. They're Covered Bridge plain chips..so basically the best plain chips you're going to get.

I tried out two Heluva Good dips as well. Heluva Good dips are sour cream based. The French Onion..was pretty flavourless (that's all that I wrote for notes). The Dill Pickle is a nice change of pace from your standard Phili dill pickle dip, it's more dill than pickle which is interesting.

December 20, 2016...The chip of the day was President's Choice Loads of Sour Cream & Onion. They tastes like they sounds. The ridges have a mid thickness..going by memory I believe they're similar to Wavy Lay's..The flavour is salty with a hint of sweet. They taste like sour cream and onion rings..which I'm super into. My final note was "not bad" which is somewhat confusing because I quite enjoy sour cream and onion rings. I'll have to have another kick at these and figure out why they're not in the regular rotation. Maybe it's just the SC&O stigma of being a somewhat wack..err second rate flavour.

At the end of 2016 I also have a note in my phone for albums to get..of the 6 albums I've purchased 3:
  • Iron Chic's Not Like This which was just catching up on some slept on goodness..err downloaded goodness that required purchase (if you want to read about Iron Chic go to a past blog post Bogus Journey...I don't specifically speak to Not Like This [which is a beyond fantastic album {cutesy monster man is damn near perfection}] but I speak of Iron Chic in a general sense).
  • Gateway District - Partial Traces (12" ep). It took me a while to get this strictly because a single side 12" is somewhat expensive to get shipped up to Canada. Minneapolis (in  my mind) 'pop punk' supergroup. They play the most beautiful pop rock/punk with an edge and hints of country and 80's pop (in my head anyway..there's just something about the vocal delivery that reminds me of country and I can't put my finger on it). At times Gateway District is almost anthemic. Everything they put out just makes me want to pump my fist and dance. Their music just triggers the release of dopamine or whatever it is that makes one happy and hopeful.
  • Josh Martinez - Blotto. Now this one actually sat in my (online store that will not be named) cart for the past 4.5 years..I can't explain why it took me up until a month ago to actually buy it. It's a typical Josh Martinez album..fantastic. Melodic raps depicting the realities of a road warrior rapper with a sense of humor..but not comedic. Production by Stuey Kubrick and Sapient (Sapient has a quite distinguishable somewhat spacey/videogameish sounding production style..that might be the wrong way to describe it but it's great). I believe that this is the last album that Josh Martinez put out (solo or as part of the Chicharones or Pissed off Wild)..fingers crossed for future output..but if there isn't any, Blotto is a bangin swansong.
 Stay hydrated,
MARC

Lean On Me

I first saw The Flatliners on May 9, 2003. They were opening for Bigwig/The Planet Smashers on the grind tour and kicked ass. Their sound has changed since that date but it hasn't stopped them from becoming one of my favourite bands both recorded and live. Because of my affinity for The Flatliners I was drawn to The Warehouse (Calgary) on September 26, 2007. Having never heard the other bands that were to be playing that night I had very few preconceived notions (I did very little, super lazy, research), I was just there to see The Flatliners and hoped the other bands didn't suck. To my absolute surprise and amazement, the opening? band (might have been 2nd of 4, I can't remember for sure [it really doesn't matter]) The Peacocks absolutely slayed. This 3 piece punkabilly band from Winterthur, Switzerland owned the stage. There was no fancy lighting, costumes or pyrotechnics..just three guys in jeans and black shirts rocking out. When they played there was pure uncut en...

2, 4, 5 Trioxin

I recently went on a road trip with my wife (Teresa) and daughter. Covered thousands of km's..Saskatoon -> Fort McMurray -> Calgary -> Home. Throughout this trip we stopped in at 4 record stores, 1 British food import store (to grab some of them uk chips, one of the many flavours was mentioned in The Letter F ) and stayed with friends/family in each city. This trip also resulted in at least 2 gifts that become tales in this here blog in the paragraphs below. The first record store that we ventured into on this trip was the Vinyl Diner in Saskatoon. Whenever Teresa and I go to record stores she usually leaves me to my business and finds a store nearby to browse or just hangs out at the front while I get into the zone. This time however turned out to be different. A few days after we arrived home from Calgary, I found out that with this particular visit to the Vinyl Diner Teresa was doing her own browsing, with the stealthiness of a ninja, that went completely unnoticed b...

I Don't Want to Go Down to the Basement, Either

I like pop punk. Ramonescore..Lookout, Recess, Red Scare, It's Alive records; you know, that ilk. Majority of what I'm exposed to (or expose myself to) is either American or based out of GTA/Ottawa areas. For some reason, it's rare for me to get a record and find out that the band is from the prairies or western Canada. This is not to say that there aren't killer pop punk bands in these regions, it just takes more digging to find them. (I know, you're angry and yelling Chixdiggit! at the screen right now. There's always exceptions). One of these amazing Canadian pop punk bands is based out of Vancouver and go by the name of The Hextalls. I had heard their name before but never really gave them a listen until last January (2014) when I got their LP "Rock You to Sleep". Shit is fantastic. Catchy, cheeky without turning themselves into a joke; straight forward pop punk. With heavy nods to the bruddas, I would be more than surprised if at least a few of th...
