Got around to the Sprouts Potato Co. Kettle Style Chips Salt & Vinegar, "Salty Tangy" "Crispy Crunch" that I had picked up when in the states this past spring. I was quite looking forward to them as the previous sprouts flavour that I'd tried was quite okay. When I cracked the bag it was quite fragrant with the tangyness of vinegar. With my first bite I found the seasoning to be quite ordinary, not super heavy but present. As I kept consuming the 141g bag I noticed that the odd chip had a weird tang to it, similar to a malt vinegar but not quite the same..those chips have a more aggressive bite to them (with a hint of sweetness but not on the Covered Bridge levels). The odd chips had a real earthy taste to it as well (which I'm into). There was a good ratio of standard vs well done chips within the bag. The crunch is similar to the other Sprouts bags that I've had where it's not quite your typical aggressive kettle cooked crunch but somewhere between a kettle cooked chip and a standard potato chip. The seasoning is uneven throughout the bag, which is usually a bag thing but it bobs and weaves through almost 3 distinct flavours and doesn't leave any chips flavourless. One of the more interesting S&V flavours that I've tried. If you see a bag of these chips pick em up as they're quite enjoyable (the bag is oddly purple, I don't associate purple with S&V typically..is that just me?)
So this past week Davey Dynamite (and friends) Holy Shit came in the mail. I had seen this on one of the Dying Scene contributor's best of 2017 list last year, I took note but for some reason didn't check it out. Cut to about 2 months ago, I was on Dying Scene again and there was a reference to the review or something like that..so I figured what better time to check it out and gee golly it's a fantastic album. Socially conscious lyrics that are angry without sounding too bitter. Vulnerable vocal delivery. At times his vocal delivery almost reminds me of Mal Blum..other times I really get a The Riot Before vibe. This album makes me feel hopeful, makes me feel happy. There's a real plan-it-x'ness to Davey's music. Uptempo head nodding punk rock with folk influence. He also recorded an acoustic version of Holy Shit that is far more raw in the recording/production. I really enjoy Holy Shit..and you will too..I hope. Both are available for pay what you want on bandcamp, I'd recommend paying something towards the downloads because this is an album that's putting something positive out into the world.
Stay hydrated,
Marc
