Talk Is Cheap

I'm a 30 something from Manitoba who's into punk..so it should go without saying that my music collection contains albums from both Propagandhi and Combeback Kid. With that said, I don't believe my Manitoban status skews this next statement, Comeback Kid were huge in the mid to late aughts. I somehow missed the boat in their early years, I remember seeing Figure Four in Brandon, however if CBK played I wasn't in attendance. It wasn't until their sophomore album, Wake the Dead, that I caught the CBK bug (wow, until I pulled up the full album on youtube I never realized Wake the Dead was only 25 minutes). It was heavy, melodic and just full of energy. There were plenty of mosh worthy breakdowns, but it wasn't straight up meathead music. Early CBK had enough 81 in their DNA to deserve the punk suffix after hardcore. I also consider myself lucky to have witnessed Comeback Kid live in the Scott Wade years. I don't recall Scott being much of a talker but he just had a presence on stage that demanded your attention, it's not like he was out there being a crazy person 'acting' like a singer, he was just a natural front man who sang with conviction. After Scott left the band I paid attention to them for a while, I picked up Broadcasting when it came out and caught them live in Calgary a few times, but it just wasn't the same to me (I want to say that their sound went a bit more towards 2000's metalcore..but maybe it was just in my head and the sound stayed the same [after all, the primary songwriter never left the band]). Since the late aughts I've sort of fallen off with Comeback Kid, I haven't seen them live with Andrew fronting in over a decade (of course I made the trek to the 10 year Turn It Around anniversary tour when Scott came back and they played at the WECC in Winnipeg [heading into that show I wasn't quite sure if it would be the same...but it was]). For a singer who more or less bangs the songs out one after the other (albeit putting every drop of blood, every bead of sweat into his delivery), Scott (along with the rest of the band) still put on an absolutely captivating show. I'm not really sure what the point of this was, I think it's that I loved Comeback Kid's first 2 albums and if Scott ever comes back for another tour, make an effort to go see them.

So Barcel Chip's sabor Jalapeno, papas fritas sabor Jalapeno, El Arte de hacer papas. I believe that's spanish for Jalapeno potato chips. I wrote about Barcel Chip's about a month ago (thanks again Top) and this is the second of 2 bags that I was given. When I cracked them open I was met with the scent of oil and spice (as in spicy). The seasoning appears to have an slightly orange hue to it. The crunch is again somewhere between standard chip and kettle cooked, not quite as crunchy as kettle cooked but it's definitely kettle cooked's hombre. I find it surprising that there's no mention of queso within the flavour description because these are jalap and cheddar. There's a bit of creamy cheeseness to the chips and a very enjoyable jalapeno heat. On the spicer side of jalap, but definitely still wholly within the jalap heat spectrum. These are some serious bangers, they have a flavourful heat and the chips themselves have a fantastic crunch that's fairly distinct (at least compared to most of the chips that I've consumed). I had high expectations for this bag after eating the Fuego Limon flavour and they more than met my expectations. Well done Barcel Chip's, well done.

Stay hydrated,
MARC

The End of All Things

I am not an expert on Nomeansno, but I can tell you this..their music can be quite difficult to get on physical media (LP, CD or otherwise [unless you want to spend somewhat spicy money]) in Canada. Luckily, Alternative Tentacles reissued Wrong. Now, cross border shipping is still muy caliente, but enough distros picked it up in Canada to allow me to put Wrong into my record collection this year. Nomeansno (since 1979) played (ended 2016) chaotic punk rock that I want to say fell into hardcore, but they were far more than a single genre. Wrong is unconventional for a punk band to say the least. The bass is lively as hell, with a tone that's absolutely perfect. The drums know when to get weird and when to kick it into overdrive. I don't know if it's jazz or funk, but there's something in the mix that if Nomeansno wasn't so aggressive it might feel pretentious..instead they're just odd and make me wish I had the opportunity to seem them live. Lyrics are talk sung...

Piss Angel

I'm not super into metal. I enjoy dabbling into the genre every once in a while, however I am far from being an expert.  A good number of years ago I read a review of this band called Pig Destroyer; they had no bassist and played some heavy fucking metal. I checked them out on myspace because the review, and name of the band, intrigued me. The music was good enough, however being that I lean more towards the punk side of the music spectrum I didn't feel the need to add any of their music to my collection. That being said their name has always stuck with me..and whenever I put those words together it brings to mind blackness. I can only assume that their shows have the gnarliest of mosh pits. In my mind it'd be one of those pits that people go into expecting to get hurt. The first few minutes might be awesome but eventually you end up with a bloody nose and dislocated shoulder. It's more of a dick out than a fun time... This past Friday I had a small bag of Blair'...

Dying Every Day

Yooooo! Old Dutch Pretzel Pieces, All Dressed Flavoured, are bangin'. I wasn't planning on putting up a post tonight, thought maybe I'd just take some notes in my phone, then I popped these in my maw and had to grab the laptop. The pieces are soo piecey, it's like someone had a bad day and took a bat to these pretzels (that would have been 1.5cm+/- diameter. I'm not typically a pretzel man, but these are thick enough that they're not just dried out meh, they have a dense crunch. Mildly bready (but still crunchy) goodness. Now, the flavour is what really knocked my socks off. I'm not sure if they use an agent or if there's moisture from the pretzels but the seasoning is heavily covering these pretzel pieces. It's like when you're at the movie theatre and put butter or margarine on the popcorn, then sprinkle some seasoning on and it's almost like a pasty seasoning in certain parts. There's also some well-toasted pretzel that welcomingly po...
