Gruesome Tasks

Paqui gives you a heat rating on the back of their tortilla chip bags. The ratings are Not Hot, Kinda Hot, Hot, Super Hot, and Freakin' Hot. Tonight I pulled a bag of Fiery Chile Limon out of the salty cellar..they're rated super hot and honestly, I'm not super jazzed about consuming these. I think they'll lean too far towards feat of strength chip territory. With that said, I was going to reach out to my metal connection for a heavy recommendation...but I decided to check out a band that he had posted on his IG story recently, Cancer..specifically Cancer's Death Shall Rise album. Death Shall Rise is a 1991 release from this British death band. The music is undulating between mid and fast to lightning tempo...all the time super heavy while leaving lots space in the songs for banging. The vocals are weird, you can make most of the words out fairly easily. At first the singers voice had me scratching my chin but 10 minutes in I'm down, I'd say he's definitely proto cookie monster..but maybe that's just death. The shifts in tempo are enough to fully keep my attention. Internal Decay finishes off this album perfectly. Heavy and super enjoyable.

Halfway through writing the above paragraph I decided to finally pop a Fiery Chile Limon chip into my maw. I contemplated sour creaming it right away but then decided that would be an injustice to the chip for my first taste. I'm actually quite happy that I chose to consume the chips naked because they've actually quite enjoyable. My thoughts of my mouth being ravaged by these chips was not cool, I have learned tonight that I shouldn't just judge a chip bag by it's cover...err, name and heat rating. The limon is very present on these chips, I believe it's there for 2 reason; to helps open up your tongue to let the heat in easier, and because lemon (and lime) slaps. The seasoning is somewhat powdery with the aforementioned lemon, accompanied by a very pleasant mid-hot to hot chili flavour, and I do mean flavour, it's just just a faceless heat (I think the label of super hot is a little misleading, halfway through this 155g bag my forehead is sweating, however, I haven't required any sour cream or water). The chips are a bit odd, they appear to be slightly thicker than your standard tortilla chip, however when you crunch into them their an airy mid weight crunch, quite enjoyable as well. The corn is there, but it's in the background and mixes perfectly with the seasoning. These chips bang, I'm sorry for starting this post off with a less than optimistic outlook for this bag of chips.

 Stay hydrated,

MARC

ps. I really wanted to title this blog after track 2 of Death Shall Rise, but it just felt a little too click baitish.

pps. I let youtube keep rolling after Death Shall Rise. I think I'm going to have to check out more Entombed

Stairway to heaven 2

Dear Diary, I was in Dollarama last week picking up some last minute..well it doesn't really matter why I was there. Anyway, as I was in the line for the checkout and out of the corner of my eye I noticed a blue bag that I'd seen a million times before. For some reason this time, it's unassuming blue on blue top with stock photo potato chip bottom intrigued me (that in addition to it being 280g for $2). I thought, to myself, 'hey, they carry Covered Bridge..maybe these Made in Canada "D Gourmet" potato chips are some other high end chip that just happens to be carried in dollar stores.'. I proceeded to take the $2 leap and threw them in my basket. Within an hour of getting home I had cracked the bag and was happily consuming. These D Gourmet Salt & Vinegar potato chips were for lack of better term, pretty run-of-the-mill. The chips are somewhat sterile, no well done chips and no skins, and fairly lightweight. The seasoning is faint but fairly well di...

At the end of 2023 I saw Quit It! play in Winnipeg at the Handsome Daughter. I typically try to catch the opening bands, because I like being introduced to new music. One of the opening bands was Leon's Getting Larger, LGL (not sure if they ever abbreviate their band name like that [it reminds me of LWL, the Jersey pop punk band from the late 90s early 2000s, I'll Always Remember the 6th is such a banger {LGL doesn't really sound much like LWL, other than a bit of off center pop sounding...where was I going with this}]) were really fun to watch and they produce a sound that I don't hear very often coming out of Manitoba (maybe I just typically run in a different musical circle?). Anyway, Leon's Getting Larger put out their first album late last year, You Be Good Now ...which saw a vinyl release earlier this month (February 2025). I ordered a copy and it came to my door late last week. This album's great. Leon's Getting Larger has a couple singin' voices...

Quiet Violence / No More Sleep

When I saw that Spencer Jo was touring central Canada I made a note of it...so just over a month ago I went to a show in Winnipeg with my wife. Spencer Jo, Grotoko and Borrowed Standards put on an amazing show.  Borrowed Standards opened up (this was my first time hearing his music) with a set of aggressive acoustic folk. If you told me Borrowed Standards put out an album on Plan-It-X I would believe you. Folk that sounds like it's about to go off the rails, but stays on track the whole time.  Next up was the draw for me, Spencer Jo. Before their set I had mentioned that Quit It! hadn't played Guts & Glory and asked if they were going to play it that night. Long story short, they explained why Quit It! took Guts & Glory out of the set and asked if that was a request. Well, I didn't intend it to be a request, but if they wanted to play it who was I to stand in their way, haha. Spencer Jo plays more straight forward folk with a hint of punk and has a presence on s...
