Radio

About a month ago Mike Park posted on IG that he found some copies of Bruce Lee Band's Division in the Heartland 12". I always have some back catalogue Asian Man Records stuff in mind to fill out an order for cases like this (because shipping is brutal these days). In goes the order..which also included Small Crush's Running + Home 7"..and some classic Slapstick descendant albums that I for some reason or another didn't have. Both Lawrence Arms and Alkaline Trio's debut LP's, Guided Tour of Chicago and Goddamnit, then I rounded it out with the Trio's Maybe I'll Catch Fire. I'm of a certain age that I may have procured these classic albums years ago when I was a teenager and didn't have much money, may have. Either way, I was pretty stoked when the vinyl brick came in the mail this past week. The entire Lawrence Arms catalogue has been on regular rotation for years, however Alkaline Trio was sort of in my peripheral, there were a few songs that I really dug that showed up on regular rotation (primarily Radio), however I hadn't every spent much time with their full albums (maybe it's a side effect of download overload, if I was the kind of person who downloaded a lot of music in my teenage years [if]). It wasn't until I started listening to Dan Andriano's solo albums that I thought it just might be time to get fully acquainted with Alkaline Trio, at minimum early Trio. So yeah, I've really been enjoying listening to Goddamnit, Maybe I'll Catch Fire and Guided Tour of Chicago this week. Because maybe there are some people who may not know these bands..I dunno, different veins of melodic punk rock, Trio's more croony with 2 singers, Larry Arms is a mix of smooth and not quite strained..but like, raspy-throaty melodic vocals, also 2 singers (however Chris McCaughan's vocals don't show up much on Guided Tour, so it's mostly on the sort of throaty side). Both have dark and drunken lyrics. (In case you were thinking this was a connection..no, I haven't really enjoyed any post 2005 Blink 182 album, so that was almost a deterrent for me digging deeper into Alkaline Trio)

I had some perogy poutine for supper, and I'm still super full from it...so I'm just going to dip into my phone for past notes.

Paqui, Mucho Nacho Cheese, Real Cheese, Real Spices. They look paperish. The taste is like a cheesy flavour explosion with a bit of corn and just a hint of hot pepper heat. Good corn chip crunch. The flavour distribution is on point. Creamy cheddar flavour (new note: these are on my list to consume more often. I didn't think I was going to enjoy them as much as I did).

Pure Deliciousness simply Cheetos puffs White Cheddar Jalapeno, made with real cheese. 'no artificial preservatives flavors colors. BB 7 May 2019, consumed June 8, 2021. These were a uniformly dense puff with decent puff crunch. Powdery seasoning. Initial jalap bite with a mid range heat and creamy white cheddar flavour. This was a 'merican bag so the nutrition facts were based on 28g (as opposed to the typical 50g in Canada), sodium and fat were both quite high. Pretty good puffs. The corn flavour of the puffs isn't overly present. They're more along the popcorn line of puffs. (oh, and they weren't stale)

Stay hydrated,

Marc

Lean On Me

I first saw The Flatliners on May 9, 2003. They were opening for Bigwig/The Planet Smashers on the grind tour and kicked ass. Their sound has changed since that date but it hasn't stopped them from becoming one of my favourite bands both recorded and live. Because of my affinity for The Flatliners I was drawn to The Warehouse (Calgary) on September 26, 2007. Having never heard the other bands that were to be playing that night I had very few preconceived notions (I did very little, super lazy, research), I was just there to see The Flatliners and hoped the other bands didn't suck. To my absolute surprise and amazement, the opening? band (might have been 2nd of 4, I can't remember for sure [it really doesn't matter]) The Peacocks absolutely slayed. This 3 piece punkabilly band from Winterthur, Switzerland owned the stage. There was no fancy lighting, costumes or pyrotechnics..just three guys in jeans and black shirts rocking out. When they played there was pure uncut en...

2, 4, 5 Trioxin

I recently went on a road trip with my wife (Teresa) and daughter. Covered thousands of km's..Saskatoon -> Fort McMurray -> Calgary -> Home. Throughout this trip we stopped in at 4 record stores, 1 British food import store (to grab some of them uk chips, one of the many flavours was mentioned in The Letter F ) and stayed with friends/family in each city. This trip also resulted in at least 2 gifts that become tales in this here blog in the paragraphs below. The first record store that we ventured into on this trip was the Vinyl Diner in Saskatoon. Whenever Teresa and I go to record stores she usually leaves me to my business and finds a store nearby to browse or just hangs out at the front while I get into the zone. This time however turned out to be different. A few days after we arrived home from Calgary, I found out that with this particular visit to the Vinyl Diner Teresa was doing her own browsing, with the stealthiness of a ninja, that went completely unnoticed b...

Stairway to heaven 2

Dear Diary, I was in Dollarama last week picking up some last minute..well it doesn't really matter why I was there. Anyway, as I was in the line for the checkout and out of the corner of my eye I noticed a blue bag that I'd seen a million times before. For some reason this time, it's unassuming blue on blue top with stock photo potato chip bottom intrigued me (that in addition to it being 280g for $2). I thought, to myself, 'hey, they carry Covered Bridge..maybe these Made in Canada "D Gourmet" potato chips are some other high end chip that just happens to be carried in dollar stores.'. I proceeded to take the $2 leap and threw them in my basket. Within an hour of getting home I had cracked the bag and was happily consuming. These D Gourmet Salt & Vinegar potato chips were for lack of better term, pretty run-of-the-mill. The chips are somewhat sterile, no well done chips and no skins, and fairly lightweight. The seasoning is faint but fairly well di...
