DLTDHYOTWO

About a month ago I was shopping with one of my roommates and he picked up a bag of Miss Vickie's Sweet Southern BBQ. They looked good to me, with the lil hot pepper on the front of the bag. I tried a few chips from his bag but didn't make any notes...except for the mental note to pick up a bag so that I could write some words about them. So, about a week ago I grabbed myself a bag. Sweet and mesquite with a little bit of bite. It's not a heat that'll bring on forehead sweats, but just enough bite to add a nice heat to the flavour, gets the salivary glands going. The chips are just above mid weight kettle cooked, the odd trace of skin but in general they're primarily present to add a crunch to the seasoning. These are a nice tweak to the mesquite BBQ family. A party mix of these, Miss V's Spicy Ketchup and Miss V's Spicy Dill pickle in a bowl would be right bangin'.

I was going to try to find something southern to pair with these, but nothing really jumped to mind so it looks like I'm going to start with a visual companion tonight and see where it goes while I'm writing about the album. I've heard about The Barstool Preachers for a while, I can't remember if it was initially through Razorcake or maybe Do the Dog on Instagram?...either way, they were on my radar but not in my collection..until this past week. With my pre-order of the Slacker's new album I also grabbed a copy of BSP's 2018 Grazie Governo. On Grazie, The Barstool Preachers meander between street/oi punk and ska with a sprinkle of pop. The vocals have a slightly raspy melodic and heartfelt delivery. The lyrics are progressive and personal with a drink here and there. There's a sweet bounce to the music that pairs so well with the bite the lyrics provide. It's a Pirates Press release so the packaging is great, square edged jacket, lyric sheet with the inner sleeve being a folded 11x11 stencil that has the BSP Logo on one side and Grazie Governo on the other. The album is a lava red with some orange around the edge and black streaks from the inside out.

Stairway to heaven 2

Dear Diary, I was in Dollarama last week picking up some last minute..well it doesn't really matter why I was there. Anyway, as I was in the line for the checkout and out of the corner of my eye I noticed a blue bag that I'd seen a million times before. For some reason this time, it's unassuming blue on blue top with stock photo potato chip bottom intrigued me (that in addition to it being 280g for $2). I thought, to myself, 'hey, they carry Covered Bridge..maybe these Made in Canada "D Gourmet" potato chips are some other high end chip that just happens to be carried in dollar stores.'. I proceeded to take the $2 leap and threw them in my basket. Within an hour of getting home I had cracked the bag and was happily consuming. These D Gourmet Salt & Vinegar potato chips were for lack of better term, pretty run-of-the-mill. The chips are somewhat sterile, no well done chips and no skins, and fairly lightweight. The seasoning is faint but fairly well di...

At the end of 2023 I saw Quit It! play in Winnipeg at the Handsome Daughter. I typically try to catch the opening bands, because I like being introduced to new music. One of the opening bands was Leon's Getting Larger, LGL (not sure if they ever abbreviate their band name like that [it reminds me of LWL, the Jersey pop punk band from the late 90s early 2000s, I'll Always Remember the 6th is such a banger {LGL doesn't really sound much like LWL, other than a bit of off center pop sounding...where was I going with this}]) were really fun to watch and they produce a sound that I don't hear very often coming out of Manitoba (maybe I just typically run in a different musical circle?). Anyway, Leon's Getting Larger put out their first album late last year, You Be Good Now ...which saw a vinyl release earlier this month (February 2025). I ordered a copy and it came to my door late last week. This album's great. Leon's Getting Larger has a couple singin' voices...

Quiet Violence / No More Sleep

When I saw that Spencer Jo was touring central Canada I made a note of it...so just over a month ago I went to a show in Winnipeg with my wife. Spencer Jo, Grotoko and Borrowed Standards put on an amazing show.  Borrowed Standards opened up (this was my first time hearing his music) with a set of aggressive acoustic folk. If you told me Borrowed Standards put out an album on Plan-It-X I would believe you. Folk that sounds like it's about to go off the rails, but stays on track the whole time.  Next up was the draw for me, Spencer Jo. Before their set I had mentioned that Quit It! hadn't played Guts & Glory and asked if they were going to play it that night. Long story short, they explained why Quit It! took Guts & Glory out of the set and asked if that was a request. Well, I didn't intend it to be a request, but if they wanted to play it who was I to stand in their way, haha. Spencer Jo plays more straight forward folk with a hint of punk and has a presence on s...
